Summer Craft Ideas

Summer camps are looking for quick, easy, and inexpensive projects.

The first project to make is the Coke bottle Sand Man. It is a great summer activity because the sand could be messy, so therefore, it would be great to do it outside. Colored sand is often sold in an assortment which is perfect for a classroom. The pipe cleaner for the arms. Use a low temp glue gun to adhere them onto the back of the bottle. The way you start is to pour the different colors of sand into the bottle tilting it to create different designs. If you stick a pencil down the side it will force the colors downward, making a very cool image. It is important that you fill the bottle all the way to the top so that the sand cannot move around, otherwise your design will shift and get ruined. I took a piece of brown tag and brown yarn to make the head of my Sand Man. Then I glued that with the low-temp glue gun to the cap of the bottle. Wiggle eyes can be glued on, or you can buy the peel and stick kind, and the pom pon gets glued on as well. You can obviously decorate your bottle differently or use different materials. This is a simple, low cost, fun project which is great for summertime.

A paper plate bumblebee is really cute and very fun for the kids to make. Teachers will love it too because it is very inexpensive. I first painted the paper plate yellow. I let that dry and then painted the black stripes across the plate and let that dry. Use those really big wiggle eyes that I used in this project. The wings can be made with cellophane and black tag. The glitter stems and pom pons may be used to give it a little extra flair, but you can decorate it any way you want. The mouth is made with simple glitter glue.

The next project to make is a cellophane Elmer, which is perfect to do after you read the classic childrenıs book. I drew the elephant shape free hand, but if that is not something you can do then you can trace the shape on the cover of the Elmer book. Once you have it drawn, cut out the shape so you can then trace it onto Black Tag paper rather than construction paper; you need it to be sturdier. The next step is to cut the shape out of the black tag so you have an elephant hole in your paper. Glue some clear cellophane over the shape, which will then be the back of your picture. The cellophane sheets you can just cut into little shapes or squares and glue them on top of the clear cellophane. The last step is to write the word Elmer in white paint or chalk.

If you buy craft doilies, then the last project is perfect. A doily flower is really a two-part project. First you have the kids paint the white heart doilies onto some bright paper, creating different designs, and then you let them dry and use them to make your flowers. If you have red or pink doilies, you might skip the first part mentioned above and just go to the next step. I painted my white heart doilies different colors, but you can paint yours all one color if you wish. I glued the doilies to a small paper plate using the edge of the paper plate as the surface to glue them onto. I painted a strip of a corrugated box green for the stem and attached that to the back of the paper plate. Thatıs all there is to making a doily paper plate flower.
